Oahu

Oahu is the center of activity for all the Hawaiian Islands. It is known as the sun and fun capital of Hawaii. And it is no wonder with the sheer variety of things to do, no matter what your age or interests.

Oahu is home for many types of activities, including land, sea, and sports activities. The beautiful rainforests provide a wonderful backdrop for long hiking trips. There are several historic monuments and museums, including the Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor and the Iolani Palace, site of the only U. S. royal house. Luaus and Polynesian shows are a constant attraction. There are many companies offering submarine rides, which give an opportunity for visitors to see the abundant ocean life up close. There is also the zoo, an aquarium, and guided garden tours where visitors can learn about the indigenous plants of the islands. And, of course, there are the golf courses. Golf on Oahu is unlike golf anywhere else in the United States, with courses that are cut through the thick rainforests and set upon the black lava rocks, creating backdrops that can be seen nowhere else.

Lots of activities can be found for the young as well. The Hawaiian Nature Center offers educational hikes through the rain forests. Many surfing companies offer instructional classes to beginners and children in surfing, boogie boarding, wind-surfing, and even snorkling. The Children's Discovery Center offers interactive galleries, where kids can get their hands dirty learning about the islands. Sea Life Park's Splash U is specifically designed to capture the attention and imagination of both the young and the young at heart. There visitors can get up close to stingrays, sharks, and moray eels, as well as many other beautiful and interesting creatures of the Pacific.

The dining and shopping are simply amazing. Oahu has hundreds and hundreds of locally owned stores and markets offering merchandise that is uniquely Hawaiian. But there are national chain stores and upscale boutiques as well. The rich mix of races and cultures has created a cornucopia of tastes in the dining choices. Visitors could literally spends weeks eating their way across Oahu, experiencing all the ethnic backgrounds, and never get the same flavors twice.

The beauty of Oahu is undeniable, from the tropical surroundings contrasted against the sharp-edged mountains and black, lava desserts, to the 139 beaches. It is no wonder so many visitors leave with a promise to return soon. Whether you are a gung-ho sports enthusiast, a young couple on their honeymoon, or someone just wanting some relaxing time in an unbelievable atmosphere, the Island of Oahu has something just for you.
